In this week’s blog we step away from our world of industrial and commercial roofing and focus on a subject which is very close to our hearts, our mental health and wellbeing. This is something that can affect each and every one of us and it’s never been more important to encourage people to speak about their state of mind and to support each other.
The UK’s health secretary, Matt Hancock, has announced an update to the three-tier system in England which will take us through both the festive and New Year periods. It is estimated that some 38 million us of will now spend Christmas and the New Year in tier 3 which offers the tightest coronavirus restrictions.
2020 has been a very tough year for the majority of us, if not everyone. We have all witnessed an unprecedented attack on our freedom, our livelihoods, our finances and ultimately our mental health. Despite the new vaccine which is now being rolled out, it’s still going to take quite some time before we return to life how it was before Covid-19 reared its ugly head.
We all realise by now that this Christmas isn’t going to be the same as the ones we’ve enjoyed in previous years. The ‘most wonderful time of the year’ is going to be a completely different affair as the virus continues to be rife throughout the UK but it will still cause many of us more unwanted pain unfortunately.
Christmas, with all its trimmings, might be something that you look forward to but for others it will be a particularly tough time of the year. If you’re already suffering with your mental health or feeling overwhelmed, the additional stresses such as eating more food, drinking more alcohol, never-ending family arguments and financial pressures will only add fuel to the fire.
The harsh reality is that Christmas is renowned for being a lonely time for many of us and it’s the time of year where the greatest number of people tragically decide to end their own life. It is estimated that over 800,000 families across the world will be buying one less present this Christmas as a result of suicide in 2020. This shocking statistic is a harsh, sad reality that mental health is a bigger and more widespread problem than we realise.
There’s increasing hope that the improved awareness and publicity will help bring this number down significantly but it won’t happen overnight. With your help it can happen more quickly by reaching out to your family and friends and just being there to listen to someone unload their pain and torture could save a life this Christmas.
As we prepare to say goodbye (more like good riddance) to this horrible year, just pause and hold a thought for those who are no longer with us as a result of the pandemic or suicide. If you’re reading this and feel you can no longer continue with your life, please talk to someone and share your feelings with them so they can help you get through your suffering. It might just be the best Christmas present you’ve ever received.
